LAUSD ‘Young Women’s Leadership Conference’ on Nov. 5 introduces girls to judges, CEOs, pilots.
The Los Angeles Unified School District will be hosting its ninth annual Young Women’s Leadership Conference from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 5. The virtual event is open to all grades 6-12 students.
Some of this year’s speakers are medical doctors, judges, CEOs, pilots and business leaders, according to Lorena Franco, a coordinator from the LAUSD Student Empowerment Unit. The conference has a limit of 1,000 participants, and registration closes on Oct. 28. “They have shown me how to be an effective leader because of the fact that they listen to the students … and they would find ways to help them out,” said Chun, who has been on the committee for four years. “That is actually pretty important because having people who listen is actually pretty nice.”
Chun said that she struggled with her mental health when school lessons shifted online during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I have been starting to take those steps [of writing daily affirmations] and it has changed how I view myself and what I do. It really helped me a lot,” she said. “I go to a STEM school and it’s always inspirational to hear from women who are in STEM because [women] are underrepresented in that field,” said Salim, who hopes to major in public health.
