For people fleeing violence and persecution in those “home countries,” that isn’t really an option.
The latest lowlight from Fox News's white-nationalist variety hour comes courtesy of Laura Ingraham, whose closing-act position makes her especially prone to trafficking in the sort of exuberant absurdity required to keep viewers angry and/or awake until 11 p.m. At this point in its evolution, The Ingraham Angle is basically a serialized version of Crank, but for casual xenophobia.
If someone crosses the border legally, with rare exceptions, they should be turned back immediately. Family units—or people posing as family units—would not make this dangerous trek once word spread in their home country. [...] If you want to apply for asylum, that's fine. But you should do so in the safety of your home country. Or, as is beginning to happen now, once you're in the United States and you declare, you should be sent to Mexico until your case comes up for hearing.
By definition, asylum seekers cannot apply"in the safety of their home country," because the mortal dangers of their home country that compelled their exodus is what made them asylum seekers in the first place. Anyone who tries to immigrate to the United States while residing in their country of origin is not applying for"asylum"; they're just trying to get a visa.
