A bridge under construction in Hershey is continuing to cause problems for commuters— a week after it was supposed to be complete.Jennifer Kline works at the Children's Miracle Network near the construction, and said it's been causing issues for her daily commute, adding on 10-20 minutes every day.
According to PennDOT however, the bridge is still facing a laundry list of upgrades. Mae Mehaffie also works near the construction. She said this time of year is especially difficult due to increased tourist traffic, and the bridge's proximity to Hersheypark. “I usually have like a 10 minute drive, I like to go home on my lunch break— the other day it literally took me 20 minutes. I had to extend my lunch break by like an hour— it was really inconvenient," said Mehaffe. PennDOT says Norfolk Southern Rail runs directly under the bridge, and every time a train goes by, work needs to stop. No work can be performed that could potentially disrupt railroad operations. This means that every time a train is coming and the contractor is performing an operation that could foul the tracks, like using a crane to pick beams or drive piles, they have to stop work and wait for the railroad flagger to allow them to start back up. This is a common practice when building near the railroad; however, this track is very busy and there are a substantial number of piles on this project so it limits to the amount of time the contractor can work continuously. Traffic in the area is also affecting businesses— like the Children's Miracle Network— sitting just opposite to Laudermilch Road. “Unfortunately we have had to do a lot of detouring due to the bridge that has gone out... I know that it has impacted some of our donors and some of our visitors," said Kline. If you want to get to the other side of the bridge— take a right on North Lingle Avenue, another right on East Chocolate Avenue, and a slight right on East Derry Road.CBS 21's Sarah Burns got in touch with Norfolk Southern Rail and they said the bridge case is being handled by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission . PUC said the last extension was placed on the case in 2024 by PennDOT, allowing them until December 31st, 2025 to finish the bridge. In a statement Tuesday, PennDOT said "We expect the project to be completed sometime in the middle of next summer."
