New Jersey police say scammers contact residents by using spoofed phone numbers that appear to be legitimate major bank fraud lines.

Police say callers pose as bank fraud department representatives and offer to send couriers to collect debit cards from a resident's home. Police in New Jersey are warning residents about a scam involving phony bank fraud investigators who arrange for in-person pickup of residents’ debit cards.

They say scammers contact residents by using spoofed phone numbers that appear to be legitimate major bank fraud lines. The scammers accurately reference recent, legitimate transactions on victims’ accounts to establish credibility, then falsely claim additional unauthorized out-of-state transactions have occurred. These additional transactions are fabricated and used to convince victims their accounts have been compromised, police said. Victims are told a courier will come to their residence to collect their debit card and deliver it to the bank’s fraud department.Police remind residents that banks will never send couriers to collect debit cards. Residents should not provide personal or banking information over the phone and should not surrender debit cards to anyone, police said. If contacted by someone claiming to be from a bank’s fraud department, residents should hang up and call their bank directly using the phone number on the back of their card. Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized by this scam should contact the Barnegat Township Police Department at 609-698-5000.Mad Dog warns Dodgers’ spending could trigger MLB labor fight: ‘This is getting to be a joke’The Advance Local Express Desk uses AI tools to assist in producing content, which is reviewed and edited by staff.
