South Africans can expect to pay quite a bit more for electricity from April. 💡 ECRNewsWatch SALGA

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa last week approved Eskom’s 18.49% price hike for municipal bulk purchases of electricity.

Municipalities will, however experience the increase in July, as opposed to the 18.65% the rest of Eskom customers will see in April.Municipalities also cannot increase their tariffs during April and July, as their financial year starts on the 1st of July every year. The South African Local Government Association in KZN chairperson Thami Ntuli says the price hike will hurt not only struggling residents but the collection of revenue by municipalities who depend on electricity sales for revenue.

"Some municipalities will struggle to pay the electricity and people who are also poor will struggle. It will not bring any hope for people who are living in municipalities, especially in this time."
