Vladimir Putin has spoken at the BRICS summit in South Africa via videolink as an international arrest warrant prevented him from leaving Russia. And drone attacks on Russian soil are becoming almost a nightly occurrence.
In a rambling speech, Vladimir Putin says he is"delighted" to be able to greet representatives of the BRICS countries - although, of course, he is appearing by videolink.
It's worth pointing out the Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and its decision to pull out of the Black Sea grain deal, have had a large impact on the grains industry. Vladimir Putin is discussing Russia's economic situation as he appears via videolink at the BRICS summit. He calls for BRICS partners to cooperate on equal terms, and also offers an update on his offer of free grain for African countries - which he says talks are almost finished on. Mr Putin also said the BRICS grouping was on course to meet the aspirations of most of the world's population.
It's also been said that it is in Russia's interests to drag out the war in the hopes the West will back down. We've been reporting this afternoon on the start of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg - but what is it exactly? Few details have been released about what will be discussed at the summit, but mutual goals and how the countries can improve ties are usually on the agenda.
He said volatility on financial markets had hampered companies' investment decisions and was something that needed to be brought under control. "Work is needed, among other things, on limiting unproductive, speculative demand, controlling the outflow of capital, monitoring the behaviour of the main participants of the financial market."
Last month, the leaders of Russia and Belarus said Moscow had shipped some of its tactical nuclear weapons, but the US and NATO haven't confirmed the move. He gave no details, but said:"It is changing the architecture of security in our immediate neighbourhood, but also of the eastern flank of NATO, at the same time. So in fact it is changing the situation for all of the alliance."
