Staff at a north Gaza hospital are refusing to evacuate, saying they will not abandon their patients despite the threat of an Israeli ground offensive. Al-Awda hospital, which is believed to provide maternity and neonatal services among other care, was told by Israeli authorities to evacuate on Friday night. They were initially reported to have been given just two hours to evacuate before this was extended until 6am Monday, according to humanitarian doctors Médecins Sans Frontières.
But hospital director Ahmad Mhana has rejected the instruction, saying the hospital has 35 doctors remaining who 'insist on staying and providing services to patients'. While many patients have been transferred, some wounded and sick patients remain in the hospital, he said, warning that the site was facing 'catastrophic conditions.
