In May 2022, Latonya Dorsey, whose restaurant Mama T’s lost a bid to provide meals in a federally subsidized feeding program, contacted the city to suggest the possibility of bid-rigging.
The fallout from a City of Dothan after-school feeding brouhaha continues, the latest wrinkle being a $25 million lawsuit filed Tuesday by a business owner whose initial complaint launched an investigation.
A subsequent investigation determined that the content of Mama T’s bid may have been leaked. Stephanie Wingfield, the Leisure Services employee in charge of the feeding program, was fired by the city. She promptly filed suit for wrongful termination; a local judge upheld the dismissal, but an appeals court ordered the city to reinstate her.
Wingfield is back on the job; the feeding program has been taken over by the city school system, and Dorsey now seeks $25 million, saying she wants to be made “economically whole.” Bill Perkins is editorial page editor of the Dothan Eagle and can be reached at [email protected] or 334-712-7901.
