Austin police continue to swat down online rumors that a Rainey Street Serial Killer is behind the deaths of people pulled from Lady Bird Lake.

A body found in Lady Bird Lake last week is the third this year, fueling rumors about a serial killer in Austin that police have said over and over doesn't exist. Austin police responded to the 2000 block of Scenic Drive on Aug. 6 at 7:53 p.m. for an urgent welfare check, officer Austin Zarling said during a news conference that evening. Upon arrival, witnesses told police that there was person floating in the water. First responders located a man in his 60s; he was declared dead at 8:15 p.

'There is no known threat to the general public at this time,' Zarling said. 'This has been considered an isolated incident.' Two other bodies have been found in the lake this year: one on Feb. 5 and another on April 13. Five bodies were found in 2023, Police continue to shoot down online speculation about a so-called Rainey Street Serial Killer, purported to be prowling the popular entertainment street by the lake.
