Freshman Karson McGrew’s hat trick puts the Warriors in their first title game since 1989, where they’ll face Dimond.
The last time the Wasilla Warriors hockey team advanced to the Alaska state championship game, not only were none of the players on their current roster born, neither was their head coach. With their 4-1 win over the West Anchorage Eagles on Friday night, their three-decade-plus long drought came to an epic end.
Wasilla faces Dimond for the championship Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Curtis D. Menard Center in Wasilla. The Lynx topped South 8-2 in the other semi to punch their ticket to the finals. It was the second most goals that McGrew has ever scored in a game in his life up to this point. He said he scored five goals in a game when he was 12 years old playing club hockey but even that feat paled in comparison to what he pulled off in his first year at the high school level.
“He showed his strength fighting through that stick check on his first one, battling on the second one and his work on the defensive zone is what allowed him to get that last empty netter,” Dargis said. “That was the best complete game that I’ve seen that squad put together and it’s really gratifying for it to come in a big moment like that.”
