He wants to encourage all runners to get CPR training, as quick, effective CPR is what saved his life.
Watts started out with his regular run-and-walk racing strategy. A woman who passed him several times on the course would tell him later that she noticed that he was sweating heavily, and during the last mile or so began to hunch over with his arms at his stomach.
In total, he underwent 10 minutes of CPR before the medics arrived on scene. They delivered a shock to his heart, which restored a normal rhythm, and air lifted him to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon. But Watts doesn’t remember any of this. In fact, he doesn’t even remember anything from his prerace prep that morning to waking up in the hospital, when he asked the nurses if he finished the race.
