Before KnivesOut and TheLastJedi, Rian Johnson directed three BreakingBad episodes. The director revealed he was asked to direct a BetterCallSaul episode and explained why he had to refuse it.
Rian Johnson reveals he was asked to direct a Better Call Saul episode. The famous filmmaker is best known for writing and directing Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and the Knives Out murder-mystery film series, which spans two installments – Knives Out and Glass Onion, with a third on the way.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Months after Better Call Saul came to a dramatic conclusion, Rian Johnson revealed he was once approached about directing an episode of the equally acclaimed Breaking Bad spinoff series. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson revealed that he was contacted by Better Call Saul producer Melissa Bernstein about directing an episode, but unfortunately, he was unable to because of his busy schedule.
"Yeah, I was too busy. I think at some point, [producer] Melissa Bernstein got in touch about it, and I would have loved to but the reality is, it gets harder and harder to block out time."Rian Johnson's History With Breaking Bad Before The Last Jedi and Knives Out, Rian Johnson worked hand in hand with Vince Gilligan on Breaking Bad.
Rian Johnson recognizes how these two episodes represent two extremes for Breaking Bad, saying that "Fly" is "where nothing happened" and “Ozymandias” is "where everything happened." Other than Fly and Ozymandias, Johnson also directed Breaking Bad season 5, episode 4, "Fifty-One," for which he received a Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama series.
Even though he was unable to return for Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad won't be Rian Johnson's last directorial effort for the small screen. He recently created Poker Face, a case-of-the-week mystery series that follows Natasha Lyonne as a casino worker who goes on the run but can't help but solve crimes. In addition to writing and producing Poker Face, Johnson directs at least the show's three episodes, including the first two of four that premiere on January 26 on Peacock.
