The FBI uncovered the largest cache of homemade explosive devices ever found, during a raid on a Virginia property owned by Brad Spafford.

Federal authorities are calling it an unprecedented discovery. The FBI uncovered the largest cache of homemade explosive devices in its history during a raid on a Virginia property earlier this month. The operation on December 17 led to the arrest of 52-year-old Brad Spafford at his 20-acre farm in Isle of Wight County. Court documents reveal that Spafford was initially arrested for allegedly possessing an unregistered short-barrel rifle.

However, the search of his property uncovered far more alarming evidence: over 150 improvised explosive devices, assessed to be pipe bombs, along with various other hazardous materials. According to prosecutors, some of the pipe bombs were labeled “lethal.” They were found preloaded into what appeared to be a wearable vest, raising significant concerns about potential plans for their use. The explosive devices were primarily discovered in a detached garage on the property, though others were found in unsecured areas, including a backpack in a bedroom. Prosecutors further detailed a disturbing find inside Spafford’s freezer—a jar of HMTD (hexamethylene triperoxide diamine), an extremely volatile explosive material capable of detonating from mere friction or temperature changes. The jar, labeled “dangerous” and “do not touch,” was stored alarmingly close to food items accessible to Spafford’s family. “Even after losing three fingers from an earlier accident involving homemade explosives, Spafford made the reckless decision to continue stockpiling such materials, including storing highly unstable chemicals in his home’s freezer,” prosecutors stated in court filings. The investigation into Spafford began earlier this year when a neighbor alerted authorities about his suspicious activities
