The Hector and Gloria López Foundation gift is aimed at removing barriers that keep first-generation students from attending college.
Our Lady of the Lake University is set to receive a $2.2 million grant from the Hector and Gloria López Foundation, the largest private gift in the history of the university.
First generation students entering college from high school, or transferring from certain areas, will have the opportunity to receive financial assistance from the grant through a random selection process. Recipients, known as López Scholars, will receive tuition assistance as well as funding for a range of expenses associated with higher education, like housing, paid internships, study abroad programs and leadership development, according to the release.
“This will be a transformative gift for many of our students, about 40 percent of whom are first generation,” OLLU President Abel A. Chavez said in a statement.
