A large tornado touched down Friday in Little Rock, Ark., part of a major storm system forecast to bring severe weather across the central U.S.
The National Weather Service said it had received reports of downed trees and power lines as well as damaged homes around the city. There were no immediate reports of fatalities, the agency said.
Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. urged residents to take precautions. “Please stay off the roads and away from the affected areas to allow emergency responders to work,” heThe city’s fire department said there was heavy damage and debris in west Little Rock, and rescue operations were under way. A temporary shelter for displaced residents was opened at a high school, according to the mayor.
A tornado was confirmed in Iowa in the afternoon by the weather service office in Des Moines. Passengers in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, airport were moved into a back hallway because of a tornado warning. Between 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected, with sleet and freezing rain in some areas. The combination of heavy snow, wind, freezing rain and sleet may cause power outages, the National Weather Service said.
