The plume of Saharan dust is set to cross the Texas coast on Tuesday and move inland toward San Antonio by Wednesday.

A heavy plume of Saharan dust has already traveled about 5,000 miles through the atmosphere, from the Sahara Desert in northern Africa to the Gulf of Mexico. Now, the cloud of dust only has a couple hundred miles left on its journey before reaching the Lone Star State, causing hazy skies and air quality concerns across many Texas cities. Saharan dust in Texas is a result of the Saharan Air Layer, a very dry, dusty layer of air that forms over the Sahara.

By Thursday night, the atmosphere will start to clear out, and the air quality is expected to improve significantly by Friday. Air quality San Antonio’s air quality, along with most other Texas cities, will be much lower on Wednesday and Thursday. Most people will not encounter major issues, but the increased dust could cause allergy flare-ups, including eye and throat irritation.
