Nonprofit groups continue to seek resources to help migrants who are arriving at the border in San Diego County and are later being dropped off at transit centers by Border Patrol
As soon as the white SUV arrived Monday to the makeshift camp erected at the border in Jacumba Hot Springs, dozens of waiting migrants approached asking for food, water, even female toiletries.
“We don’t have an end in sight,” said Logan Goverman, a spokesperson for Interfaith Community Services, which has provided resources to more than 200 people who have been dropped off at an Oceanside transit center in the last five days. “It’s not that we can’t handle this, but there’s only so much you can do when you’re not getting support from the government.”
In a statement last week, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said the agency was prioritizing “at-risk” populations such as families and children. The majority of migrants are not staying in San Diego County but are headed to other parts of the country to meet friends and family or seek help from programs they have heard about. Nonprofit groups are helping coordinate their travel but are often asked to help with shelter, food and other basic needs for a few days while those arrangements are made.
In Jacumba Hot Springs, at least 200 migrants waited at the border on Monday to be processed. They used tree branches to build a refuge from the sun and cold. The group agreed that they did not imagine they would have to wait outdoors. They said they walked all the way from Tijuana. Meanwhile near San Ysidro, a group of migrants waited between the primary and secondary border walls, but smaller than in recent days. At the port of entry nearby, PedWest, one of two pedestrian crossings there, remained closed Tuesday. U.S. Customs and Border Protection decided last week to temporarily close it so officers could assist in the processing of migrants. It was unclear when it would reopen.
