A four-alarm fire broke out in a vacant commercial building in Salt Lake City's Ballpark District on Thursday, Dec. 19. 70-80 firefighters battled the blaze, which was contained to the building. No injuries were reported and no evacuations were necessary.

A working fire has produced a large column of black smoke over Salt Lake City. Authorities of the Salt Lake City Fire Department were on the scene of a blaze that erupted in an industrial area near a residential neighborhood in the city’s Ballpark District by 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19. Officials reported that 70 to 80 firefighters were battling the four-alarm fire, which sparked in a vacant commercial building. By 11:30 a.m.

, the fire was reportedly contained to the building which had been cleared. No evacuations were issued for surrounding structures, nor were any injuries reported. The Utah Transit Authority TRAX line was temporarily shut down from 9th South to 13th South and West Temple to 3rd West. Doug Flager of the Central Ninth Community Council shared that the building has been vacant for the last eight years, and has become a hotspot for transients to do drugs and escape harsh weather. He shared that the building’s gates were broken into Wednesday night. Flager stated the building is a community safety hazard, adding that this is the third fire that has broken out in the structure over the eight years he’s lived in the area
