Sen. Laphonza Butler , who was appointed to the Senate earlier this month to fill the late Dianne Feinstein’s seat, announced Thursday that she would not run for a full term in 2024.
The former labor leader and Emily’s List president was appointed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom to serve the rest of Feinstein’s term after the longtime senator died last month. In doing so, Newsom kept his promise to pick a Black woman in case of an early vacancy, and Butler wasNewsom had faced intense pressure to choose Rep. Barbara Lee if a vacancy occurred, because of the depth of her experience and the length of her service to California.
