Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the upcoming DCU television series Lanterns, has revealed that the project will offer a fresh perspective on superhero storytelling by focusing on the human aspects of its Green Lantern characters.
Lindelof, who is developing the series alongside Chris Mundy, praised writer Tom King's approach, which emphasizes that heroes share the same fundamental desires as ordinary people. He noted that King's life experiences, including time spent in the CIA, bring a unique intensity and sophistication to the material. Lanterns is structured as a murder mystery, blending crime drama with superhero elements.
The cast includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, and Ulrich Thomsen, with Nathan Fillion returning as Guy Gardner. Laura Linney, an Emmy winner, recently joined the production. The official logline describes the series as following new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, and veteran Hal Jordan, portrayed by Kyle Chandler, as they investigate a dark murder in the American heartland, uncovering an intergalatic conspiracy. The show is produced by HBO in partnership with Warner Bros.
Television and DC Studios, with James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Ron Schmidt serving as executive producers. Originally slated for HBO Max, the series shifted to HBO as part of a new content strategy. Lanterns aims to set a new standard for grounded superhero narratives within the DC Universe
