After a disappointing loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, Oregon coach Dan Lanning faces scrutiny regarding his program's ability to reach the top of college football.
Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning faced criticism after his team's lopsided loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2025 Rose Bowl . CBS Sports analyst Josh Pate, on his show, suggested that while Lanning is a capable coach for Oregon, he may not be ready to lead a program to the top of college football . Pate acknowledged Lanning's impressive 35-6 record in three seasons, including an undefeated regular season and a Big Ten Championship victory over Penn State.
However, he pointed out that Lanning's lack of head coaching experience before Oregon and the team's struggles against a high-powered Ohio State offense highlighted areas for growth. Lanning himself admitted that his team wasn't prepared for the challenge, stating 'I didn't get our team prepared, and that's a great team. When you play a great team like Ohio State, you can't not be clicking on all cylinders. And they were, they were clicking on all cylinders. We didn't really have the ability to stop them and the ability to get something going for us on offense. And we haven't faced a lot of moments like that this year.
