Despite the furore over the so-called banning of Afrikaans at universities, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says the government's policy does not discriminate against the language. | JasonFelix

The government says its policy on language frameworks at universities does not discriminate against Afrikaans. The use of Afrikaans as a medium of communication in universities has been found, in some instances, to exclude non-white South Africans.

Despite the furore over the so-called banning of Afrikaans at universities, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says the government's policy does not discriminate against the language. This emerged in Nzimande's response to a written parliamentary question from DA MP Leon Schreiber. Schreiber asked Nzimande whether the amendment to the Language Policy Framework for Higher Education Institutions, to recognise Afrikaans as an indigenous language, had been gazetted.

"My department has consistently stated that the focus of the policy framework is on the promotion of multilingualism and upliftment of the historically under-developed and previously disadvantaged indigenous languages as languages of communication and academia within our universities. "The technicalities around the definition of 'indigenous language' as articulated in the Policy Framework has been duly acknowledged and are being addressed accordingly," Nzimande said.Black people feel unwelcome': Khampepe report slams Stellenbosch University language policy, DA to take it on review"We have championed [the] equality of all official languages of the Republic.
