HBO's newest miniseries, starring Olivia Colman, is based on a twisted true tale of love and violence.
Susan’s parents—Patricia, 63, and William Wycherley, 85—similarly kept to themselves, perBut their relationship with their daughter and son-in-law had dark undercurrents. During the murder trial, Susan claimed that her father had sexually abused her, and that her mother was complicit. But that’s not directly what led to the deaths of her parents.
Instead, the killings were tied to finances. In the 1970s, Susan’s step-grandmother left her an inheritance of 10,000 pounds, half of which Susan used to buy her parents’ former home in a suburb of London, per the BBC. Though Susan and Christopher struggled with debt, Susan’s parents apparently convinced Susan to sign the rights to the house back to them. She did, and they promptly sold the house, then moved to Mansfield—sparking resentment from Susan that would turn into a years-long grudge.
Susan and Christopher visited her parents in May of 1998, during a bank holiday. This is when Patricia and William were killed. Later, Susan and Christopher told police that Patricia and William had gotten into a late-night fight, leading Patricia to fatally shoot William. Susan and Patricia then got into an argument, leading Susan to fatally shoot her mother. Christopher, Susan claimed, had nothing to do with the killings. All he did was dig the grave to bury the bodies.
In France, they continued to struggle with money as Christopher had a hard time finding work. They grew so desperate that Christopher called his stepmother, Elizabeth and confessed to burying the bodies, asking her for money so they could avoid trouble. Elizabeth instead turned them into the police, sparking the discovery of the bodies in 2012, and the arrest of the couple.
“You are each as responsible as the other for these crimes, and I see no reason to distinguish between you on sentence,” Judge Thirlwall said
