Lando Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri came in third at Zandvoort, while Lewis Hamilton was knocked out in Q2 and finished 12th

Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri third at ZandvoortLando Norris took pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix with a magnificent lap at Zandvoort for McLaren. He beat Red Bull’swho was knocked out in Q2, finishing in 12th place. His teammate, George Russell, was in fourth with Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez in fifth. On the narrow twisting challenge that undulates through the sand dunes of the coastline, Norris proved to have its measure by executing with admirable precision.

After a weekend of rain on and off, the track was still rubbering-in as the session progressed with grip improving, evolving to reach its peak for the final laps. Verstappen headed out before the two McLarens, but while he committed he could not match them in the first sector. He threw himself into the rest of the lap and was quicker through the second and third sectors and grabbed provisional pole.

Hamilton will face a tough task on Sunday after his final run in Q2 was not up to scratch, with a very poor first sector proving costly where he dropped three-tenths. It was a deficit he could not overcome and was enough to push him out of the top ten., which proved revelatory in pace. The developments adopted in the Netherlands appear to have continued that trend in further improving the car.

Norris claimed pole in Hungary last month but an issue with his shift into second gear off the line cost him the lead to Piastri who went on to win afterlate in the race. Norris accepted that the orders had been fair but will be determined to take this race by the scruff of the neck and dictate from the front as he knows he must do if he is to take advantage and close down the gap to Verstappen, who leads the British driver by 78 points in the championship.
