McLaren driver Lando Norris's chances of securing pole position in the Mexican Grand Prix were dashed after an aborted first run and a mistake on his final lap. Despite a strong performance in practice, Norris was called into the pits during his first run, leaving him with only one opportunity to set a fast lap. However, he encountered a yellow flag due to Fernando Alonso's spin and was unable to deliver when it mattered most. Norris took full responsibility for his performance and acknowledged that he should have advanced to the next qualifying session.
The McLaren driver had looked to be a strong contender to challenge for pole position in Mexico City, after showing some impressive form in Friday practice. But it all went wrong at the start of qualifying when his first banker run on medium tyres was aborted following an instruction from the pitwall. That left him with everything to do on his final effort when there would be no margin for error thanks to how compact the entire field has been this weekend.
