A Queensland landlord has been charged over a house fire that claimed the lives of a father and five boys. Wayne Godinet and his young boys perished when the blaze tore through the property on Russell Island near Brisbane in August last year. The children’s mother and another woman survived the inferno. The fire was declared non-suspicious, but police on Wednesday charged the house’s owner, a 61-year-old Tweed Heads woman, with failing to install smoke alarms.

Failure to do so attracts a maximum penalty of a $774. Godinet, 34, and the boys aged 11, 10, three and four-year-old twins were unable to escape the blaze at the Todman St home, which broke out in the early hours of the morning. The cause of the fire has not been revealed. Assistant Commissioner Andrew Massingham, then a Detective Superintendent, said at the time that “some elements of this incident that do require closer scrutiny”, but nothing had pointed to the fire being suspicious.
