Landing fired roughly a third of its Alabama staff — but first the real estate startup had the laid-off workers train their cheaper, Mexico City-based replacements
Employees said they were replaced by workers in Mexico City. Two described training their replacements. The CEO of Landing, Bill Smith, last week that the furnished-apartment startup had cut 110 jobs in order to"best position the company for success and long-term growth."
According to the company, it launched its Mexico operation in 2020, which has grown to include at least 100 employees. These employees have supplemented the headquarter's operational teams that handle inquiries from renters, call members, and help ready apartments for move-in, according to all four former employees.
In his email to Insider, Smith said that the"majority of roles" of those laid off were on teams that were no longer necessary, as the company moved 70 employees from its headquarters directly into individual markets. However, two laid-off employees disagreed with this assessment and told Insider that while some employees had been moved into markets earlier this summer, they still required the help of a centralized operations team.
