Worry as reports come in of voters in Lancashire being turned away, with one pensioner left in floods of tears
Concerns have been raised after voters in Lancashire were turned away from polling booths as voter ID was introduced for the first time ever in elections across England.
In Preston, one councillor reported a pensioner in their ward was left in tears. The account was put forward by Labour Councillor Freddie Bailey, Cabinet Member for Community Wealth Building at Preston City Council. They added that it included one police officer, who was turned away despite showing their warrant badge and police ID.
Tom Brake of Unlock Democracy, who is leading a coalition of groups including the Electoral Reform Society, Fair Vote UK and open Britain against the imposition of Voter ID, said: “Today has been a dark day for British democracy. Reports from all over the country confirm our very worst fears of the impact of the disastrous policy which has been made worse by the shambolic way it has been introduced.
