Wade took out the lineup card, but that was all he could do to participate in the game honoring the Negro Leagues.

San Francisco Giants’ LaMonte Wade Jr. is congratulated after connecting for a home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth inning, Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, in San Francisco, Calif. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — When Willie Mays died earlier this week, many Giants players and coaches only learned of the news when it was announced in the middle of their game at Wrigley Field.

“It’s kind of hard to put into words,” Wade said Thursday, addressing Mays’ passing for the first time. “You go out there and try to play the game the right way. Just go out there and play. And to have a legend like that to be following you, giving you pointers about the game, trying to teach you lessons about the game with what he went through, it’s very special. Something you’ll never forget, for sure.

Despite progressing to on-field activities during this road trip, Wade estimated he was still “a couple weeks” away from returning to the lineup. Melvin said he was “at least probably a week away from him playing.” “I thought it was going to work out. I don’t see why it wouldn’t,” he said. “BoMel really pushed for it and I appreciated him for doing that. But the rules are the rules and you’ve got to follow the rules. But I mean, for something like this, you would think that they would make an exception. I feel like we make exceptions in this league for other stuff, so why not this one?”
