Residents may take home up to five gallons of salt for personal use on driveways and sidewalks.
Lakewood city officials said the rock salt distribution boxes are back in place at Kauffman, Madison, Cove, Lakewood Park as well as the Lakewood Dog Park.
Chaz, a Lakewood local, visited the Madison Park location on Wednesday. “Better have it and not need it, than need it and not have it,” he said.“Understanding where we live and the elements, we’re prepared completely for what’s ahead,” Lakewood Public Works Director Chris Gordon said. “Higher numbers, lower numbers, whatever’s needed.”Chaz says it’s a chance to make sure his driveway and sidewalk stay snow-free.
“It’s really tough getting the salt out of the stores at this time of year. Everybody starts freaking out, running out of rock salt and toilet paper,” he said.City officials also reminded residents to cover the rock salt box to prevent the salt from hardening due to rain and/or moisture. Last year, the city refilled all of its community salt boxes around five to six times, costing around $1,400.
Gordon says the investment is well worth it: “It was something that we wanted to push forward for the residents of Lakewood. We’ve been happy with the program, and we will continue to push with it.”Lake County man accused of driving drunk, killing cyclist faces judgeFeds charge 18 members of Cleveland street gang, Fully Blooded Felons
