The Interlaaken Bridge in Pierce County is closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
by Paul Rivera, KOMO News ReporterThe Interlaaken Bridge in Lakewood is closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic as of May 17, 2024. “The full closure is the result of further analysis by a contracted structural engineering firm that identified a high rate of deterioration among wood beams that comprise the bridge structure,” officials said.
“The bridge was built in the early 1920s and retrofitted in the mid-1950s," a Lakewood city spokesperson said. "We’ve run regular maintenance and inspections on the bridge. The last major work was 2012 to replace caps/beams that were deteriorating, similar to what we’re experiencing now.” City engineers met with the Pierce County engineering office and consultants Friday morning to review the latest inspection analysis.
Engineers are also assessing which crossings under the bridge can stay open for boats, as some are anticipated to be closed for safety reasons, officials said.
