LOS ANGELES — With forward Anthony Davis out indefinitely, the Lakers need to find ways to fill the 6-foot-10 void, both offensively and defensively.
Without Davis, however, the Lakers suffered a deflating loss to the second-worst team in the NBA. They lost to the Charlotte Hornets, 134-130, on Friday night in their final home game of 2022. It was the Lakers’ third loss in a row as they prepare for a five-game road trip that begins Sunday in Dallas.
Gordon Hayward got the tiebreaking layup on a goaltending call against LeBron James with 6.3 seconds to play. Thomas Bryant had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Lakers before leaving the court with 3:16 to play while holding his right shoulder in obvious pain. Bryant, who returned to watch the final possessions, has been solid as the starting center in Davis’ absence, and a significant injury would be another major blow to the rotation.
Both were available Friday after missing the last two games, a pair of high-scoring road losses. It was the first time this season the Lakers have allowed consecutive teams to score more than 130 points.
