Walton, 39, saw his job security come into question as the Lakers struggled despite the arrival of LeBron James last summer.
CONNECTTWEETLINKEDINCOMMENTEMAILMORELOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Lakers and head coach Luke Walton have "mutually agreed" to part ways, the team announced Friday.
Rumors that not all was well in Laker Land surfaced as early as the first two weeks of the campaign, when Walton and then-president Magic Johnson engaged in a testy meeting following a disappointing start. Johnson abruptly stepped down from his role Tuesday, in advance of the last game of the season, with the Lakers well out of the playoff picture.
There were suggestions that Johnson’s departure may have been enough to save Walton, a friend and favorite of Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. However, a 37-45 record and the theory that it might be easier to attract big name free agents with a new coach in place, appear to have sealed his fate.
