LeBron James and Austin Reaves spark a fourth-quarter run and the Lakers get a 121-107 win against a Phoenix team resting most of its starters to stay in seventh place in the Western Conference wit…

LOS ANGELES — The Phoenix Suns, also known as the team no one wants to face in the playoffs, rolled into Cyrpto.com Arena to face the Lakers on Friday night.

Well, not exactly those Suns, winners of seven in a row and 8-0 with Kevin Durant in their lineup. Certainly not the collection of talent that also includes Chris Paul, Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton and has potential Western Conference playoff opponents quaking in their hightops. These were the backup Suns, and they still proved to be a handful for the Lakers, who went with all their usual starters but still had to scramble for a 121-107 victory in another of those must-win games down the stretch, a game they needed to win if they hoped to avoid the play-in tournament.

The Suns are locked into fourth place in the conference standings and determined to rest their top four players in anticipation of an extended playoff run. The Lakers , who maintained seventh place with a hard-earned victory, have won five of six and eight of their past 10. The Lakers won despite a head-scratcher of a game from LeBron James, who spent much of it trying to force the issue. He missed shots, deferred to his teammates at times and scored only 16 points on 6-for-19 shooting with six rebounds and six assists. He and Anthony Davis started slowly before rising to the occasion when it mattered most.James and Austin Reaves sparked an 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter to stake the Lakers to a 107-96 lead.
