Voters appeared likely to hand Lake Station Mayor Bill Carroll a second term Tuesday as the Democrat led GOP challenger Ben Fontanez Jr. and independent Javier Chavez in unofficial results.

Democrats were ahead the races for every seat on the city council and the clerk-treasurer’s office. The election marked the first time since 1999 that Republicans fielded candidates for every office, except city judge. “At the end of the day, I’m grateful to lead the city for another four years,” said Carroll at city hall where votes were counted from the city’s seven precincts. “We’re doing what’s best for our community.

During Carroll’s first term, the city replaced three lift stations and Stormwater workers added more drains in streets to alleviate flooding near Deep River. The city repaved 11 major roadways with state Community Crossings matching grants. The city also used COVID-19 relief funding to upgrade Riverview Park, adding pickleball courts and improvements on an archery range. Voters appear to be happy with their Democratic city council, as well.
