Other HOF inductees included Michael Budzik, chief of the Ohio Division of Wildlife from 1995-2003; Leon Mertz of the Lake Loramie Improvement Association; Nancy Stranahan, chief naturalist with the ODNR; Milton Brent, the first black officer serving the Ohio Division of Wildlife from 1972-2001; Reverend Pascal Bright, known as the father of Hocking Hills State Park; and Emmett Conway Jr., founder of Superior Hardwoods of Ohio and renowned for his sustainable practices in forest management.
This year’s winning team was a collection of young charter captains made up of Will Tibbels, Kody Ferguson, Cole Johnson, Brody Loeckel and Wyatt Solecki, who measured a 262.5-inch limit of 10 fish anchored by a 29.5-inch walleye. They were followed by teams skippered by John Tulcholski and Jared Rhode .
There are good schools of walleye nearby for fishermen who are drifting and casting to the near-shore waters off Cleveland and Lorain. The best depths off Cleveland have been 26 to 42 feet, but anglers are heading north to the 58- to 64-foot depths in hopes of hooking a trophy walleye. The walleye bite has been best off Fairport Harbor in 70 feet, or deeper, although walleye catches closer to shore are being reported very early in the day.
