A winter storm moving across the Great Lakes will bring lake effect snow to parts of Western New York, with significant accumulations expected in some areas.
Colder air is moving into Western New York to start 2025, bringing lake effect snow to parts of the region. A trough moving across the Great Lakes will usher in cooler air, just days after record warmth. As the trough moves southward, lake snow will start off Lake Erie for areas west of Rochester. Through Wayne County to the east, rain will change to snow by Thursday morning. This pattern will continue through Sunday afternoon.
While the initial snow event will end on Sunday, more light snow is expected by the middle of the following week. Temperatures over the next six to ten days will average about 10-15 degrees below normal highs, with indications of even colder air. As this cold air moves over unfrozen lakes, we can expect more lake snows through mid-January. Rochester proper is unlikely to see prolonged lake snow but will see some accumulation, especially by the weekend. Lake snow totals should approach and exceed 18-24 inches for areas near the Tug Hill east of Lake Ontario, meaning 8-12 inches for Wayne County is possible. Travel along Route 104 eastbound will be very difficult, if not impossible, at times. Off Lake Erie, similar totals are expected, with locally higher amounts, especially at higher elevations. Travel along I-90 from Hamburg to Erie will also be very difficult at times. Parts of Wyoming County could see 6-12 inches through the weekend
