The Pugh sisters, Michelle and Sabrina, are the first Lake Creek tennis team to make it...
The Pughs, who typically play singles in the spring, and singles and doubles in the fall, are undefeated in district and regional play.“We wanted to go to state,” Michelle said. “While we were playing regionals last year, we saw the girls doubles teams and how they played. Some of them who went to state, Sabrina and I beat them in the fall season. We figured we’d have made it to state if we played doubles.
The sisters are gifted athletes. But if they didn’t pursue sports, comedy would have been a wise path. “They have great personalities,” Mauer said. “They can be very funny together. They use humor at times to release the stress of high-level competition.”“I already live with her and stuff, and then we go play tennis, and then when we’re done, she’s still there!” she said, bursting out in laughter. “I can’t get away from her.”“We communicate well,” she offered, coolly setting up the punchline. “She’ll tell me exactly when I’m doing something wrong.
“We don’t have to communicate as much as others on the court,” Sabrina said. “We just know what we have to do and cover each other’s backs.”Michelle, who likes tennis because it’s fun and for the medals, is a left-hander. She likes her backhand crosscourt. She favors forehand inside-outs. “We both are singles players but I had to work to get my volleys better so she could stay doing groundstrokes,” Michelle said. “Her volleys are bad.”Sabrina, who enjoys tennis for its competitiveness and delivering booming forehand shots, is the more aggressive player, bordering on maniacal.
