With 18 wins on the season, the Lake Creek Lions have already surpassed last season’s win total, as well as the year before that. In fact, the 18 wins with seven games left on the District 21-5A schedule are already the second-most in program history, behind the memorable run the Lions made in 2020 with 27 victories and an appearance in the regional tournament. Despite the improvement over previous years, first-year Lake Creek head coach Justin Lanham still found himself in a conversation Friday night in the hallway outside of the locker room about how things are shaping up down the stretch in the run for one of the four playoff spots.After Friday’s MoTown Showdown win over Montgomery by 15 points, Lake Creek picked up a key win in the race, snapped a three-game slide and the process and are entering a huge game Tuesday night at Magnolia West with some confidence. The Mustangs sit alone in third place, but has lost two straight games, including a one-point loss to Bryan Rudder Friday night.Lake Creek started well the last time against Magnolia West back on Dec. 16, but were outscored by 15 points in the second quarter and fell 59-50. At the midway point of district play, Lake Creek is officially in a heated race to see if it can extend its playoff streak to five consecutive seasons. “I think this win will slingshot us into Magnolia West on Tuesday,” said Lake Creek senior Braedon Bigott on Friday night. “I think we have a big chance of winning that game. As long as we come to play, have a good game plan and keep working hard at practice, I don’t see how we lose.” Lake Creek sits in a fifth-place tie with the Bears — winners against the three teams equal or below it in the district standings and losses to the four teams above it. “There’s stuff that we need to fix, just like anything,” Lanham said Friday night. “Just like tonight’s win…there’s stuff that we have to fix. We feel good going into those games and just developing a game plan.” The Lions' toughest loss came by 18 points Jan. 10 at A&M Consolidated , which is tied for first. Rudder was a much closer defeat in the Lions’ home gym as the Rangers left with a three-point win on Jan. 13. “We felt like we turned the ball over a lot against Consol and Rudder,” Lanham said. “We had 25 turnovers against Consolidated and 23 against Rudder. You’re never going to win many games when you turn the ball over that much.”Against Montgomery, those turnovers were kept at a minimum with six. “We feel like we if we fix those little errors, we’ll give ourselves a chance to win in the second round of district,” Lanham said.
