US midfielder Kellyn Acosta is one of five Black & Gold players to help their teams advance to the 32-nation tournament

The Los Angeles Football Club was well represented during the FIFA World Cup in 2018, sending four players to Russia in the midst of its expansion season.Four years later, Mexican Carlos Vela is the lone LAFC player with World Cup experience.

Acosta, Canadians Maxime Crepeau and Doniel Henry and Ecuadorians Jose Cifuentes and Diego Palacios helped their respective teams advance to the 32-nation tournament. “I remember watching draws in the past, but to be part of the team that qualified and to see your nation there, it hits differently,” Acosta said.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Henry, an imposing Canadian center back. “I’ve been here since the dark days with the national team. Seeing everything change when John Herdman took the group of boys and turned a lot of these boys into men, now we’re here. For other players intent on grabbing a spot on their country’s roster, like Uruguayan forward Brian Rodriguez, those chances hinge on performances at the club level.
