Police in Rio de Janeiro have foiled an alleged plot to bomb a free concert by Lady Gaga just hours before she took to the stage on Copacabana beach last Saturday evening. The concert, which drew an estimated 2.1 million fans, was the biggest show of Gaga's career. Authorities said they had worked with the Justice Ministry to disrupt the attack, which was allegedly planned by a group that spread hate speech against the LGBTQ community.
The group aimed to radicalize and recruit teenagers to carry out attacks using Molotov cocktails and improvised explosives, labelling the plan a 'collective challenge' intended for notoriety on social media. Police confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection with the thwarted attack. The alleged leader of the group was apprehended in Rio Grande do Sul on illegal weapons possession charges, while a teenager from Rio was taken into custody on child pornography charges.A spokesperson for Lady Gaga stated that Gaga's team became aware of the alleged threats through media reports. They assured that there were no known safety concerns before or during the show, nor any communication from the police or authorities regarding potential risks. They emphasized that Gaga's team had been collaborating closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert, and all parties were confident in the security measures in place.The concert, regarded as a major economic boost for Rio, saw Gaga perform her multi-hit album 'MAYHEM' alongside numerous classic tracks. Popular hits like 'Poker Face', 'Alejandro' and 'Bloody Mary' were amongst those performed to the enthusiastic crowd. The city's initiative to organize these large-scale concerts coincides with post Carnival and New Year's Eve season efforts to revitalize the local economy. Similar concerts are planned annually until at least 2028, showcasing Copacabana Beach as a vibrant hub of entertainment and drawing in both national and international tourists.
