The Iron Dames, the champion four-woman team of European endurance racers (one of whom is barely old enough for a driver’s license), try out go-karts, Vera Carothers writes.
Pin races with Gatting, Bovy, and Rahel Frey, of Switzerland, as the Iron Dames, the only all-female endurance-racing team in the world. Race-car driving is one of the few sports in which men and women compete professionally side by side. In this year’s Le Mans, the crème de la crème of endurance events, their hot-pink car came in fourth. As they traversed the Lincoln Tunnel, the Iron Dames were peppered with questions by a novice racer.
After the team watched a mandatory safety video, they grabbed the bespoke helmets that they’d brought along, decorated with inspirational quotes. The novice joined them for the race , in her own go-kart. “You can follow me for the first loop,” Pin offered. Frey’s advice was to cut inside the curves and then out again. She mimicked a wavy line with her hands. The pros shot ahead, an elegant fleet skidding in tandem like Santa’s reindeer. The novice lagged behind, on empty track.
