Some of the Houston office towers developed by Hines that opened in the 1970s and anchored by energy companies. Despite the region's economic diversity, energy companies have outsized sway on the value of goods and services produced in the region.A new ranking of the nation's metropolitan regions by GDP growth suggests that while Houston is no longer as reliant on oil and gas as it once was, the region still has room to diversify its economy.
As a result, the GDP numbers compiled by the Bureau of Economic Analysis illustrate the sway energy still holds over the regional economy's health. “Most sectors of Houston’s economy did grow in 2021. It was one sector which dragged down everything,” Ted Ballantine, a director at CivMetrics, said in an interview this week. “Even though Houston has a diverse economy, it’s very heavy in energy.”
While trade was a bright spot for the regional economy in 2021, with about $275 billion in goods passing through the Houston-Galveston Customs District, up from just shy of $200 billion in largely locked-down 2020, the health care sector stands out as a growth area.
