City officials are now exploring possible changes to the city’s building, housing and fire codes to require certain buildings to have the capability to connect a generator, and whether the city should purchase its own mobile cellphone towers and backup generators to avoid similar pitfalls in future storms.

The Tea Lab in Lakewood was closed for several days after massive storms on Aug. 5 left much of the city without power for several daysLAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Lakewood City Council this week identified key shortcomings in the city’s response to the destructive August tornadoes that left hundreds of thousands of Northeast Ohioans powerless for several days.

Lakewood also experienced the largest blackout in cellphone coverage, and it took cellphone providers several days to provide the city with mobile towers to restore phone service. Two Cuyahoga County officials -- Office of Emergency Management Planning and Training Director Kevin Friis and Director of Regional Collaboration Chris Alvarado -- addressed council.

Lakewood’s Acting Fire Chief Ryan Fairbanks said the department received 131 calls in the first eight hours during and after the storm. The city’s dispatch center briefly lost power and two communications towers got damaged in the storms, hampering the department’s ability to communicate at times.Friis said that, when it came time for the county to seek generators for apartment buildings, many property managers didn’t know what capacity generator their buildings required.
