Asked how Labour would handle an inheritance of slow economic growth, high NHS waiting lists, rising mortgage costs, and worsening public services should Mr Starmer make it into No 10, Mr Jones, said: “It’s going to be bloody difficult.”

“You have to be very clear from the start [of a Labour government] that you’re not going to be able to fix the structural problems in a first term,” he added.“But I think we should be up front in that it’s going to take multiple terms to do that. It can be turned around, but it’s not going to be easy.”
