Mary Hume secured more than half of the votes cast.
Labour candidate Mary Hume swept to victory in the Kilwinning by-election today, with more than 50 per cent of the vote.
The retired head teacher secured 2,171 votes, some 1255 ahead of Sheila Gibson the SNP candidate, with Conservative Chris Lawler picking up just 619. A jubilant Mary said after her success: “This is a vote for change and also for investment in Kilwinning. We had great feedback on the doorsteps." Ruby Kirkwood of the Lib Dems secured just 154 votes while Ian Gibson of the Scottish Family Party took just 36.The by-election was triggered after Tory councillor John Glover passed away in February.
The Kilwinning ward member had been suffering from ill health since summer 2023 and was granted an extended leave of absence in a bid to recover.Officials had granted the Conservative member leave until May 2024 after the local authority noted the exceptional circumstances surrounding cllr Glover’s non-attendance at a meeting of the council, committee, joint committee, joint board or other body as representative.
