“If they see there is the workforce in these areas, by and large they will come and invest. This is not about offering tax incentives to invest, but to be part of it for the long haul,” she said.
“That is why they are attracted to talking to us,” she added, as she took aim at the Tories’ approach towards levelling up. “This is not about just sprucing up the high street with a lick of paint and handing out hanging baskets.” The MP for Wigan acknowledged that the Government had correctly identified the need to spread prosperity across the country through its levelling up plans, but she said the solution put forward by the Government had since “collapsed”.-style contest between local communities who must bid against each other for their own money back.”
Ms Nandy added that such discussions needed to start happening now in the run-up to 2024 to enable Labour to “hit the ground running” should it form the next Government after the general election. “This will not be a short-term fix, but what is striking is the ambition those in the private sector have for investing in these areas.”
