Regina\u002Dborn actress Sabryn Rock discusses the deeply personal nature of her current role on CBC\u0027s The Porter, which premiered Feb. 21.
The Regina-born actress was about to become a first-time mother last spring when her agent called to deliver some huge news — Rock had just been offered a recurring role on CBC’s new series, The Porter.“It’s funny because I got the call when I was in labour,” Rock said from her Toronto home. “My agent kept calling and calling and calling. I didn’t answer but the next day in the hospital I was holding my son and feeding him and I was like, ‘I guess I can call my agent back.
“It was basically one of the only decent jobs you could get as a Black person in that time period,” Rock explained. “The porters were kind of the backbone of the railroad, doing back-breaking work, not sleeping, doing like three-day runs across the country. Obviously, coming across racism constantly and discrimination while trying to unionize. The working conditions were awful. These are incredibly strong people who are a huge part of our history.
“I’ve never really got to connect to a character like I did to Gwen,” said Rock, who plays the best friend of Marlene Massey, one of the series’ lead characters.
