EXCLUSIVE: Jonathan Ashworth, the shadow work and pensions secretary, claimed Social Security Scotland was in 'as much chaos as the SNP'
A Labour MP campaigning to reform the DWP has said he is not considering devolving more benefits to Scotland.
In an interview with the Record, Ashworth claimed Social Security Scotland was in "as much chaos as the SNP". "I grew up in a working class family in north Manchester and I remember what it was like when my dad was jobless," he said."I know a government offering a platform to people is absolutely vital. It's about transforming life chances."
The Record revealed last month how IT costs for the devolved benefits agency are projected to soar by another £26m. Asked if he would devolve more benefits to Scotland, Ashworth said: "One of the strengths of the social security system is that there is solidarity between Lanarkshire and Leicestershire.
Scottish politics A spokesman for Shirley-Anne Somerville, the social justice secretary, said: “It’s no surprise to hear that Labour would rather see social security powers stay in the hands of the Tories at Westminster rather than in the hands of the Scottish Parliament - they fought tooth and nail to prevent social security powers being devolved in the first place.
