The Allan government been slammed for failing to resolve a pay dispute with police while pushing ahead with “financially reckless” infrastructure projects.

The Victorian Labor government has been slammed for pushing ahead with a"financially reckless" infrastructure project as the state's police officers prepare to walk off the job.

However, this offer was substantially lower than the deals offered to some other public sector workers – such as the 28 per cent pay rise given to the state’s nurses. But the state opposition has slammed the government for failing to resolve the dispute, pointing out there are currently 1,000 roster positions which are unfilled on the force and police stations around the state are suffering staff shortages.

The opposition has linked the government’s mishandling of the pay dispute to its record levels of debt – with interest payments to exceed $1 million per hour by 2027-28. The opposition leader said the Allan government was signing contracts for the SRL in an attempt to force both a future Coalition government and the federal government to fund the project, despite it not having a business case.
